Founder Adam Jones began his career at BPM, a CPA firm in San Francisco with a nonprofit audit and tax specialty, and then worked at RBZ, LLP upon his relocation to Los Angeles. After several years of auditing he noticed a disheartening trend. Many of the nonprofits that he audited had weaknesses in their systems and other accounting issues that had been discussed during prior year audits but not corrected by the time the next audit began. In many cases he was writing the same management point year after year. There was a clear need for a CPA to create an accounting management resource tailored for the nonprofit industry. He started AFJ Consulting Group (“AFJ”) to assist nonprofit organizations with preparation for their financial statement audits. The original clients of AFJ flagged many other areas where help was needed: Regular reviews of the bookkeeping work; assistance with the preparation of the annual budget; assistance with reporting to funders; and much more. Clients needed a wrap-around service for their accounting department. In 2007, “Offsite Accounting Office” was launched and AFJ began providing a full-service outsourced accounting solution for nonprofit organizations.
In 2008, friend and colleague Anne Freiermuth, CPA joined AFJ and quickly overhauled the “Offsite Accounting Office” system into what is it today. AFJ’s top-notch staff, overseen by highly-trained and experienced CPAs, works with our clients to make sure every transaction is audit-proof and reported in a way that gives client management the information they need.
In 2011, Kevin Matthews, FCCA (United Kingdom CPA equivalent) joined AFJ as Principal, bringing over 15 years of experience, with the most recent 10 years spent as CFO of two large nonprofit organizations. Kevin brought additional knowledge and skills to AFJ, which enabled us to expand the services offered to clients, while still maintaining our impeccable client service and attention to detail.
In 2013, Adam, Anne and Kevin decided to join forces and form a new partnership called FMJ, LLP. FMJ was a new name, but the same great service and staff.
FMJ has provided dedicated services to the nonprofit community with bookkeeping, pre-audit preparation, budget preparation, drafting accounting manuals, financial statements preparation, special projects, and more. We pride ourselves on our commitment to unilaterally support nonprofits, allowing them to focus on their greater missions of making the world a better place.
